Why Catholics we light candles?
The custom of lighting candles in processions and to the images of Christ, Mary and the saints is a very old sign reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world and all that is in the sharing that light. The candle is a symbol of spiritual offering of devotion that continues beyond our physical presence in the holy place .
Our devotion to Mary and the saints is an expression of our communion in the mystical body of Christ ( communion of saints ) .
Jesus: "I , the light came into the world so that everyone who believes in me may not remain in darkness." Juan 12.46
You are the light of the world. You can not hide a city on top of a mountain . Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a lampstand , and it gives light to everyone in the house. Let your light shine before men , that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven . - Matthew 5:14-16 .
Behold then the light in you is not darkness. - Luke 11.35
